# Planning Center Music Stand review (2026): how it works with Services, what it costs a church, and alternatives

**In short.** Planning Center Music Stand is a chart and PDF reader for church teams that runs only on top of Planning Center Services. Scheduled musicians open the date and find the set, keys, charts and rehearsal audio waiting, with leader-driven page turns and shared annotations. The church pays $2 to $10 a month for the whole team, plus Services. It is not a personal library.

## Verdict: Planning Center Music Stand

The simplest way for a church team already on Planning Center to get every musician the right charts, keys and markings. It is not a standalone reader.

- Score: 7.4/10 (calculated from 7 weighted criteria)
- Platforms: iPad, iPhone, Android, Web browser
- Price: $2/mo per team, subscription, no free tier
- Best for: Church worship teams that already plan services in Planning Center.
- Not ideal for: Musicians who want a personal library outside a church account.
- Facts last checked: 2026-10-06

## Scores

- Reading & page turning (20%): 7.0. Pedals, hands-free turns and a leader-driven page turns for the whole team; no half-page turns.

- Library & setlists (15%): 7.5. Songs and arrangements organized by the church's Planning Center Services plans.
- Platforms & sync (15%): 7.5. iPhone, iPad, Android and the web.
- Sharing & ensembles (15%): 9.0. Team-wide: the leader's plan, keys and annotations reach every musician.
- Smart notation (10%): 6.5. Chord charts with transposition and audio attachments.
- Value for money (10%): 7.0. $2 to $10 a month for the whole team on top of Planning Center Services.
- Overall: 7.4/10

Pros:
- Charts, keys and audio arrive with each service plan
- Leader-driven page turns for the whole team
- Annotation sharing from the worship leader
- Flat $2 to $10 a month for the whole team

Cons:
- Works only with Planning Center Services
- Files must be uploaded in Services first
- No half-page turns, tuner or recording

## Key takeaways

- Music Stand is a free download with no in-app purchases, but it works only when a church's Planning Center Services account has the paid Music Stand add-on.
- The add-on costs $2/month with the 20-member Services plan, $5/month with the 5-member and 50-member plans and $10/month with plans of 150 or more, covering every team member, on top of Services itself (free for 5 team members, $15 to $239/month above that).
- Scheduled musicians see their plans automatically, but charts and audio must be added in Services before they appear in Music Stand.
- Sessions let one device turn pages on every connected device, but they need an internet connection and work only in the iOS and Android apps, not in the web version.
- Transposition works only for Lyrics & Chords (ChordPro) charts, not uploaded PDFs, and there are no half-page turns, no tuner and no in-app recording.

Planning Center Music Stand is the sheet music and chord chart reader built into Planning Center, the church management software. For a worship team that already schedules services in Planning Center Services, it removes the weekly chore of sending files: each musician opens the date and the set is there, in the right key, with the charts and rehearsal audio the leader attached.

That integration is also its main limit: Music Stand is not a standalone reader, and it works only while your church pays for the add-on. It earns one of the highest collaboration scores under our [methodology](/how-we-rank/), and our [worship team ranking](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-worship-teams/) weighs it against OnSong, SongbookPro and BandHelper.

## What is Planning Center Music Stand?

Planning Center Music Stand is a PDF and chord chart reader for iPhone, iPad, Android and the web that works only as a paid add-on to a church's Planning Center Services account. It is made by Ministry Centered Technologies, the Carlsbad, California, company behind Planning Center, founded in 2006 by Jeff Berg and Aaron Stewart.

Music Stand has been on the App Store since May 4, 2010. The current iOS version is 4.8.3 (October 1, 2026), and Android was last updated to 4.8.1 on August 26, 2026. The app is a free download with no in-app purchases.

## How does Music Stand work with Planning Center Services?

Music Stand reads everything from Services: the service plan is the setlist, and the songs, keys, files and audio attached to it are what each musician sees. Nothing reaches the app until someone adds it in Services.

A leader builds the order of service in Services, picks an arrangement and key for each song, and attaches charts, PDFs and rehearsal audio. Scheduled musicians see the plan automatically when they open Music Stand. Users with editor permission can reorder, add or delete plan items from the app.

Charts come from your own uploads or from SongSelect (CCLI), PraiseCharts and MultiTracks, which Services can import from; each needs its own account or purchase. Since August 2025, Services imports editable ChordPro charts from SongSelect.

Two settings help larger teams. Limited file visibility assigns parts by position, so a violinist automatically gets the violin PDF. And when someone reorders, duplicates or removes PDF pages to avoid an awkward turn, that page order is saved for everyone in the organization.

## Who is Planning Center Music Stand for?

Music Stand is for church worship teams that already plan services in Planning Center Services and want every scheduled musician to get the week's set, keys, charts and audio without handling files.

It is the wrong tool for freelance, classical or school musicians who need a personal library, for groups that don't use Planning Center, and for players who need MusicXML, notation playback, half-page turns or dependable offline use.

## How good is Music Stand for reading and page turns?

Music Stand covers the page-turn methods a worship team needs, and its Sessions feature lets one device turn pages for the whole band. The gap is half-page turns, which Planning Center doesn't document.

Pages turn by swipe or tap, with any pedal that acts as a Bluetooth or USB keyboard, with a MIDI device on iOS, or by facial gesture through the front camera (mouth movement, head turn or wink, with adjustable sensitivity), added in 2025 on iOS and Android. Planning Center recommends AirTurn DUO 500, BT500S-2, QUAD 500 and BT500S-4 pedals, the PageFlip Firefly and the Coda STOMP. Our [page turner pedal guide](/guides/best-page-turner-pedals/) compares the hardware.

In a Session, the leader's device turns pages on every connected device, and control can pass to another player. Sessions need an internet connection and run only in the mobile apps.

The metronome switches tempo and meter with each song and syncs across the band over Wi-Fi with Ableton Link. The media player plays audio attached in Services and loops a section. Charts can also go to a TV or projector over AirPlay, HDMI or Chromecast, two pages at a time.

## How do annotations and transposition work?

Each musician's annotations are stored online, and teammates can pull in someone else's markings, merging them with their own or replacing them. That is how a worship leader's cuts and cues reach the band. Transposition is narrower: it works only for Lyrics & Chords charts.

The tools are pen, highlighter, text and eraser. On iOS they use Apple's PencilKit, with fountain pen, watercolor, crayon and monoline tools added in 2026; Android has a simpler set. You can also import your own notes from another key of the same arrangement. Our [annotation guide](/guides/annotate-sheet-music/) covers marking techniques.

The Lyrics & Chords editor uses ChordPro and generates charts in every key, plus number, numeral and lyrics-only versions. In Music Stand you can view those charts in another key or as numbers, but the change is temporary and visible only to you. Uploaded PDF sheet music cannot be transposed. Our [transposition guide](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/) covers other routes.

## How much does Planning Center Music Stand cost a church team?

The app is free, and the church pays one monthly add-on for the whole team: $2/month with the 20-member Services plan, $5/month with the free 5-member plan and the 50-member plan, and $10/month with plans of 150 or more, as of October 2026. That comes on top of Planning Center Services.

Services is priced by how many team members can log in: free for 5, then $15 (20 members), $32 (50), $69 (150), $115 (400), $179 (1,000) and $239 (unlimited) per month. These add-on prices come from Planning Center's official pricing calculator; the Music Stand page itself quotes only $5 and $10. New Planning Center subscriptions get the first 30 days free, and billing can be monthly or annual, with no annual discount stated.

A church on the 50-member Services plan, for example, pays $32 plus $5, or $37 a month, and every scheduled musician gets Music Stand.

## Is Planning Center Music Stand worth it?

For a church already paying for Services, yes: $2 to $10 a month for the whole team costs far less than individual subscriptions. If your church doesn't use Services, Music Stand alone is not a reason to adopt it.

Compare an OnSong group plan, which gives each member Premium for $18 to $48 per user per year: 12 musicians at the 11-to-25-user rate pay $27 each, or $324 a year. The Music Stand add-on costs $24 a year for the same team on the 20-member Services plan, or $60 on the 50-member plan. SongbookPro's Groups Ensemble plan covers 12 users for $50 a year. OnSong can import from Planning Center, but only Music Stand is built into Services itself.

The trade-off is dependence. Your charts and markings live in the church's account, so your access depends on the church keeping the add-on and keeping you on the team.

## Does Music Stand work on Android, Windows, Mac and offline?

Music Stand has native apps for iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.6 or later) and for Android phones and tablets (Android 5.0 or later), plus a browser version. There is no native Windows or Mac app, and offline use depends on what you have already opened.

Web Music Stand opens from a plan in Services and handles page turns, annotation and page rearranging, but has no Sessions and no stylus support on touchscreen PCs. Planning Center's FAQ says Music Stand isn't compatible with Windows devices, so Windows players use the browser. On Apple silicon Macs only the iPad app runs, listed on the App Store as "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS". The app is in English only.

Music Stand keeps only the last 10 plans you viewed for offline use, and Sessions need an internet connection. Open the week's plans, or download the PDFs, while you still have a signal.

The newer Apple Pencil tools and MIDI page turns are documented for iOS only. Our [Android ranking](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-android/) covers standalone readers.

## What do Music Stand users report?

Ratings are middling on iOS and better on Android: 3.52 out of 5 from 324 ratings on the US App Store and 4.11 from 833 on Google Play, which lists more than 100,000 downloads, as of October 6, 2026.

Recent one-star App Store reviews describe repeated password resets (August 2026) and a pedal that stopped working before a service (August 2024); Planning Center replied to both. Development is active, with 21 iOS releases between February 2025 and October 2026. Version 4.8.3 restored external display output after the iOS 27 update broke it.

## What are the best Planning Center Music Stand alternatives?

The best alternative depends on what you need beyond Planning Center: OnSong for Apple-only teams that want live-show tools, SongbookPro for mixed devices and a one-time price, and BandHelper for bands that manage their own schedule.

- [OnSong](/reviews/onsong/) has a much deeper ChordPro engine, with capo, Nashville numbers and chord diagrams, and Premium adds backing tracks, MIDI and band streaming. It imports from Planning Center but runs only on iPad, iPhone and Mac.
- [SongbookPro](/reviews/songbookpro/) runs on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Fire tablets for a one-time $5.99 to $6.99 per platform, with Groups plans for band sharing. Our [OnSong vs SongbookPro](/compare/onsong-vs-songbookpro/) comparison weighs the two.
- BandHelper syncs songs, setlists, charts and backing tracks across a band, with admin roles and Live Sharing to up to 15 devices, for one band subscription. It has no Windows app.

For a personal library of notated scores, [forScore](/reviews/forscore/) on Apple devices or [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/) on Android and Windows fit better.

## Should you choose Planning Center Music Stand?

If your church already plans services in Planning Center, turn Music Stand on. For $2 to $10 a month, every scheduled musician gets the right set, keys, charts and audio, leader-driven page turns and the worship leader's markings. If your church is new to Planning Center, use the first 30 days free to run a few real services.

Look elsewhere if you need a reader for your own gigs, a Windows or Mac app, half-page turns, transposable PDFs or fully offline reliability. Our [overall ranking](/best-sheet-music-apps/) compares the standalone readers.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Planning Center Music Stand cost?

The app is free, but the church pays for the Music Stand add-on to Planning Center Services: $2/month with the 20-member Services plan, $5/month with the 5-member and 50-member plans and $10/month with plans of 150 or more, as of October 2026. One fee covers every team member with a Services login. Services itself is free for 5 team members and costs $15 to $239/month above that.

### Can you use Planning Center Music Stand without Planning Center Services?

No. Music Stand works only inside a church's Planning Center Services account with the add-on enabled, and files must be uploaded or imported in Services first. Musicians who want a personal library for outside gigs need a standalone reader such as forScore, MobileSheets or SongbookPro.

### Does Planning Center Music Stand work on Android, Windows or Mac?

There are native apps for iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. Planning Center says Music Stand isn't compatible with Windows devices, so Windows users open Web Music Stand in a browser, which has no Sessions. On Apple silicon Macs, only the iPad app runs, and the App Store lists it as not verified for macOS.

### Does Planning Center Music Stand work offline?

Partly. The app keeps the last 10 plans you viewed, and you can download individual PDFs ahead of time. Sessions and the web version need a connection, so open your plans before you reach a venue with weak Wi-Fi.

### Can Planning Center Music Stand transpose?

Only charts made in the Lyrics & Chords editor, which uses ChordPro. You can view those in any key or as number or numeral charts; the change is temporary and visible only to you. Uploaded PDF sheet music cannot be transposed.

### What are the best alternatives to Planning Center Music Stand?

OnSong suits Apple-only worship teams that want backing tracks, MIDI and a deeper chord engine, and it imports from Planning Center. SongbookPro runs on Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows for a one-time $5.99 to $6.99 per platform. BandHelper suits bands that want shared charts, setlists and scheduling under one band subscription.
