# Newzik review (2026): pricing, LiveScore and who should skip it

**In short.** Newzik is the strongest sheet music app for ensembles that share parts and markings: Projects sync parts and annotation layers in real time, and LiveScore turns PDFs into notation you can play back and transpose. The native app runs only on iPad and iPhone, with Newzik Web in a browser elsewhere. It is free for 3 pieces; Premium costs $44.99/year as of October 2026.

## Verdict: Newzik

The most complete app for musicians who share parts and markings, with built-in conversion of PDFs into playable, transposable scores. Solo players on a budget, and anyone on Android or Windows, should look elsewhere first.

- Score: 8.0/10 (calculated from 7 weighted criteria)
- Platforms: iPad, iPhone, Web browser
- Price: Free / $24.99, one-time + optional subscription, free tier available
- Best for: Orchestras, choirs, bands and teachers who share parts and markings, and players who want PDFs to play back.
- Not ideal for: Android or Windows tablet users, solo players who want a one-time price, and anyone who needs two-tablet page turns.

## Key takeaways

- Newzik's native app runs on iPad and iPhone only; Android, Windows and Mac users reach the same account through Newzik Web in a browser, which Newzik positions for library work rather than performing.
- The free version holds 3 pieces and 10 LiveScore pages in total; Essentials is a $24.99 one-time purchase for up to 1,000 pieces; Premium costs $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime on the US App Store.
- LiveScore conversion beyond the free pages, PDF transposition, MusicXML and MIDI export, face-gesture page turns and unlimited shared Projects all require Newzik Premium.
- If Premium lapses and the library holds more than 3 pieces, Newzik's help center says the library stays on its servers but can't be opened until you resubscribe or buy Essentials.
- Newzik has had no linked page turns between devices since Band Mode was removed in version 6.0 in April 2021.

Newzik is a sheet music reader for iPad and iPhone, with a browser version called Newzik Web, built around one idea: a group of musicians reading from the same parts and markings. It also converts PDFs into notation you can play back and transpose. Both strengths come with real limits, covered here as plainly as the features.

Newzik sits first in our [overall ranking](/best-sheet-music-apps/) because our [published methodology](/how-we-rank/) gives sharing and ensembles 15% of the score and smart notation 10%. On reading, library tools and value, [forScore](/reviews/forscore/) and [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/) both score higher.

## What is Newzik?

Newzik is a cloud-based sheet music reader made by Syncsing SAS in Paris, with a native app for iPad and iPhone and a companion web app. Your scores live in a Newzik account, so the same library, setlists and annotations appear on every device you sign in on.

It reads PDFs and MusicXML. LiveScore, its optical music recognition engine (launched in 2021 as Maestria), turns a PDF or scan into an interactive score. Newzik's 2020 funding announcement named the Vienna State Opera and the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France as clients. Development is active, with 31 iOS releases between February 2025 and September 2026, many of them bug fixes.

## Who is Newzik for?

Newzik is for groups that share parts and markings: orchestras, choirs, opera companies, bands and teachers whose students use iPads. It also suits iPad players who want to hear, loop or transpose their PDFs and will pay for Premium.

It fits poorly if you read from an Android tablet or a Windows 2-in-1 (browser only), if you want the full feature set without a subscription or a $179 lifetime purchase, or if you are a pianist or duo partner who needs one device to turn pages on another. Ensembles should also see our [best sheet music apps for orchestras](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-orchestras/); solo keyboard players, the [best apps for piano](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-piano/).

## How good is Newzik for reading and page turning?

Newzik covers the stage basics: pedals, half-page turns, a locked performance mode and offline reading. It lacks linked page turns across devices, and its most convenient hands-free option needs Premium.

Bluetooth pedals work in keyboard mode or AirTurn's AirDirect mode, and MIDI pedals such as the iRig BlueBoard work too. Half-page turns work on PDF parts in portrait, with an adjustable split point, and the landscape double-page view can advance one page at a time. Performance mode locks the screen against stray touches. Our [page turner pedal guide](/guides/best-page-turner-pedals/) covers the hardware.

Face-gesture turns (a wink or a lip movement) need Premium and a device with a Face ID camera. Newzik also offers an experimental mode that turns the page when you knock on the stand, and page turns synced to an attached audio or video file.

The gap for duos and sections: Newzik removed Band Mode, its leader and follower page turns, in version 6.0 (April 2021), and nothing has replaced it. Projects sync content and annotations, explicitly not page turns. forScore's Cue still offers linked turns, a point to weigh in [Newzik vs forScore](/compare/newzik-vs-forscore/) if you accompany or play in a duo. Newzik also documents no full dark mode, only a sepia option and a black background for Lyrics & Chords.

## How does annotation work in Newzik?

Newzik's annotation tools are complete enough for serious part marking, and its layers are designed for sharing, which is what separates it from solo readers.

You get pens and highlighters, straight lines, symbols, text, inserted pictures and, since February 2026, a Shapes tool for slurs, hairpins, extra staves and tuplets. Annotation also works on Newzik Web. Inside a shared Project, each layer is private (only you see it), public (others see it but can't edit it) or shared (everyone can edit), so a concertmaster can publish bowings while each player keeps personal fingerings.

Smart Annotations (May 2026) highlight dynamics, articulations and accidentals automatically, but only on scores converted with LiveScore. Some reviewers find the drawing tools less fluid than forScore's. Our [annotation guide](/guides/annotate-sheet-music/) compares approaches.

## How does Newzik handle your library and setlists?

Newzik keeps your library in its own cloud and syncs it to every device on your account. How much you can store depends on your plan: 3 pieces free, 1,000 with Essentials, unlimited with Premium.

You can import from Files and iCloud, Dropbox or SMB servers, upload in batches on Newzik Web, and browse IMSLP and CPDL inside the app. Setlists support folders, pinning, duplication and archiving, and a "Recently deleted" bin keeps removed items for 30 days. Newzik has no store, but purchases and rentals from 24 partner publishers, including Bärenreiter, Boosey & Hawkes, Schott and Universal Edition, arrive in your Newzik inbox.

Downloaded scores work offline. Sync, Projects, LiveScore conversion and sign-in need a connection, and offloading pieces to free device space is Premium-only.

Newzik's help center says that if a Premium subscription expires and your library holds more than 3 pieces, the library stays on Newzik's servers but you can't open it until you resubscribe or buy Essentials. Readers that keep files on your device, such as forScore and MobileSheets, don't have this dependency.

## How does Newzik handle sharing and ensembles?

Ensemble work is Newzik's core purpose, and it earns our highest score for sharing and ensembles. A librarian, conductor or teacher can push new parts, corrected parts and markings to every member of a Project in real time.

A Project is a shared setlist with the layer rules above. Essentials includes one; Premium makes them unlimited. Whether a free account can join someone else's Project is not documented, so check before asking students to sign up for free. Sending a piece by link is different: the recipient gets an independent copy that no longer syncs.

Organizations can add Newzik Ensemble, priced on request, with owner, admin and member roles, user groups, and per-project restrictions on printing, export, cropping and recording. Members get Premium-level access through the organization, and a free trial starts from Newzik Web. Schools with 25 or more users pay €10 per license per year for Newzik Education.

For teachers, recordings made in the app attach to the piece, so students can submit them inside a Project. For a gigging band, linked page turns across Android, Windows and Apple devices may matter more; see [Newzik vs MobileSheets](/compare/newzik-vs-mobilesheets/).

## What can LiveScore do with a PDF?

LiveScore converts a PDF or scanned part into an interactive score you can hear, loop, transpose and export. Accuracy depends on the scan and the music, and anything beyond 10 free pages requires Premium.

A converted score plays back through MIDI with a play-along cursor, a mixer, tempo control and measure looping, and since September 2026 it can drive external MIDI instruments. Premium users can transpose a PDF part by up to an octave, including a clef change, and export MusicXML or MIDI. The notation can't be edited inside Newzik.

Conversion takes a few minutes per page and needs a connection. Newzik's documentation lists the limits: no tablature, several voices on one staff are "still fragile", handwritten music is not recommended, and publisher-licensed scores can't be converted. MusicXML files you already have open directly in the iPad and iPhone app with part extraction, transposition and playback. See also [how to convert PDF to MusicXML](/guides/pdf-to-musicxml/), [how to transpose sheet music](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/) and our [sheet music scanner apps](/best/sheet-music-scanner-apps/).

## Newzik pricing: is it worth it?

Newzik is free for 3 pieces, Essentials is a $24.99 one-time purchase, and Premium costs $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime on the US App Store as of October 2026. Essentials is fair value for a personal library; Premium is what you pay for the features that set Newzik apart.

The free version doesn't expire, but with 3 pieces and 10 LiveScore pages in total it works as a trial. There is also a 7-day free Premium trial.

Essentials covers up to 1,000 pieces, Newzik Web, the annotation tools, Lyrics & Chords and one Project. It leaves out MusicXML and MIDI export, PDF transposition and face gestures, and Newzik's own pages disagree on whether it includes any LiveScore pages. Premium adds unlimited storage, conversions and Projects plus those features. The lifetime purchase costs about as much as four years of the yearly plan, and newzik.com shows euro prices only.

For comparison, forScore costs $24.99 once with an optional $14.99/year Pro tier, and MobileSheets costs $15.99 per platform. Once you need Premium, Newzik is the most expensive of the three, and the lapse rule makes the subscription harder to walk away from.

## Does Newzik work on Android, Windows or Mac?

No native Newzik app exists for Android, Windows or Mac. On all three you sign in to Newzik Web at web.newzik.com with the same account and work in a browser.

Newzik's help center answers the Android question with "Unfortunately not", and Google Play has no Newzik listing; a few resource pages on newzik.com that claim an Android version are contradicted by both. Newzik's site also lists "Mac: OS Sonoma or later", but the App Store doesn't offer the iPad app on Apple Silicon Macs.

Newzik Web handles the library, setlists, Projects, annotation, LiveScore and pedal page turns. Newzik itself says reading and performing work best on iPad, and a help article last edited in December 2022 lists MusicXML and Lyrics & Chords files as unavailable on the web. If you perform from an Android tablet or a Windows 2-in-1, start with our [Android](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-android/) and [Windows](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-windows/) rankings.

## What do Newzik users report?

App Store ratings are high, and recent complaints center on LiveScore playback and price. On the US App Store, Newzik has 4.58 out of 5 from 1,543 ratings as of October 6, 2026, a much smaller base than forScore's 43,198. The 4.7 Newzik advertises matches its French store, not the US one.

US reviews from June to September 2026 describe LiveScore playback that skips notes or rests, gets note values wrong or changes measure lengths, and reviews from December 2024 to November 2025 say playback can't swing. Other reviewers praise the conversion's accuracy. Tablets for Musicians, an independent review site, wrote in June 2026 that Newzik still struggles with complex scores.

Other themes: an August 2026 review describes sync hiccups between Newzik Web and the iPad, and a May 2025 review asks for a dark mode. Tablets for Musicians found the toolbars large and prone to overlapping the score, and judged the full subscription rather expensive, while rating Newzik the only mature option for large bands and orchestras.

## Should you choose Newzik?

Choose Newzik if your ensemble reads from iPads and shares parts and markings, or if you want PDFs to play back and transpose and will pay for Premium. Start elsewhere if you read from Android or Windows, want the full feature set without a subscription, or need linked page turns.

For a solo player on iPad, [forScore](/reviews/forscore/) offers more refined reading for a one-time price. On Android or Windows, [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/) runs natively. If hearing scanned scores is the main draw, [PlayScore](/reviews/playscore/) is the dedicated scanner. Save the 7-day Premium trial for a week when you can put LiveScore and a shared Project through your hardest repertoire.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Newzik cost?

Newzik is free for up to 3 pieces and 10 LiveScore pages in total. Newzik Essentials is a $24.99 one-time purchase, and Newzik Premium costs $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime on the US App Store as of October 2026. Schools pay €10 per license per year for 25 or more users, and Newzik Ensemble for organizations is priced on request.

### Is Newzik free?

Only in a limited way. The free version doesn't expire, but it holds just 3 pieces and 10 LiveScore pages in total, so in practice it works as a trial. Newzik also offers a 7-day free trial of Premium.

### Is Newzik available for Android or Windows?

No. The native Newzik app runs on iPad and iPhone only, and there is no Google Play listing. On Android tablets, Windows PCs and Macs you sign in to Newzik Web (web.newzik.com) in a browser, which Newzik positions for library management, sharing and LiveScore rather than performing.

### What happens if my Newzik Premium subscription expires?

According to Newzik's help center, if Premium lapses and your library holds more than 3 pieces, the library stays on Newzik's servers but can't be accessed until you resubscribe or buy Essentials. Plan for this before you build a large library on a monthly plan.

### Can Newzik turn pages on several iPads at once?

No. Newzik removed Band Mode, its leader and follower page turns, in version 6.0 in April 2021, and Projects sync parts and annotations but not page turns. forScore's Cue and MobileSheets' Connect Tablets both offer linked page turns.

### Is Newzik's LiveScore accurate?

It depends on the score. Newzik says tablature isn't supported, several voices on one staff are still fragile and handwritten music is not recommended, and recent US App Store reviews report skipped notes, wrong note values and changed measure lengths. Use the 10 free LiveScore pages on your own repertoire before paying for Premium.
