# forScore review (2026): the iPad reader to beat, and what it can't do

**In short.** forScore is the most refined PDF sheet music reader on Apple devices: every page-turn method, deep Apple Pencil annotation and a library built for thousands of scores, for a one-time $24.99 that covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. It is not free, has no Android or Windows version, and stays a PDF reader with no playback or transposition.

## Verdict: forScore

The most polished stage reader on Apple devices: every page-turn method, deep annotation and a mature library for a one-time $24.99. It is Apple-only and has no notation smarts, so mixed-device groups and players who want playback should compare.

- Score: 7.5/10 (calculated from 7 weighted criteria)
- Platforms: iPad, iPhone, Mac
- Price: $24.99, one-time + optional subscription, no free tier
- Best for: Solo players, pianists and accompanists on iPad or Mac who want the most refined reader for a one-time price.
- Not ideal for: Bands with Android or Windows members, and anyone who needs playback, transposition or shared ensemble libraries.
- Facts last checked: 2026-10-06

- Personal support is limited; priority support is a Pro perk

## Key takeaways

- forScore is a one-time $24.99 App Store purchase that covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro on up to 10 personal devices; there is no free version or free trial.
- forScore Pro is optional: $14.99/year, or a $2.99 non-renewing 30-day pass, adds camera face gestures, extra stamps, settings Profiles, time-limited sharing and priority support.
- There is no forScore for Android, Windows or the web; a Google Play app that calls itself forScore for Android is not published by forScore LLC.
- forScore's Cue sends page turns and score changes from a leader device to nearby forScore devices without an internet connection.
- forScore's own knowledge base says it cannot transpose PDF music, play back the notes in a PDF or detect notes on a page, and it does not open MusicXML.

forScore has been the reference sheet music reader on iPad for over a decade. It has been on the App Store since the first iPad in April 2010, it is still built by one developer, and a one-time $24.99 covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro.

It is our top pick among [sheet music apps for iPad](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-ipad/) and for [solo pianists](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-piano/). It places lower in our [overall ranking](/best-sheet-music-apps/) because our [methodology](/how-we-rank/) also scores platforms, ensemble sharing and smart notation, three areas where forScore is weaker. On reading, annotation and library tools, no app in our comparison scores higher.

## What is forScore?

forScore is a PDF sheet music reader for iPad, iPhone, Mac and Apple Vision Pro, sold as one universal App Store purchase with an optional forScore Pro subscription. It is made by forScore LLC, the company of developer Justin Bianco, who says he gets outside help only with email support and beta testing.

It reached iPhone in 2014, Mac in November 2020 and Vision Pro in 2024. The developer counts over 250 free updates since version 1.0; the latest is 15.2.3, from September 29, 2026. There is no account to create, the App Store privacy label says "Data Not Collected", and your library syncs through your own iCloud storage.

## Who is forScore for?

forScore suits soloists, pianists, accompanists, church, pit and gigging musicians, and teachers and students who use Apple devices and want a reader they buy once. Its strengths are page turning, annotation and offline reliability.

It is the wrong choice if anyone in your group reads from Android or Windows, if your orchestra needs central part distribution with librarian roles, or if you need notation playback, transposition or ChordPro charts. There is also no free version to try first. Our [forScore alternatives](/best/forscore-alternatives/) page covers those cases.

## How good is forScore for reading and page turning?

forScore supports every page-turn method we track, and its performance view is the most mature in our comparison. It is also the only app we cover with AirPods head gestures.

AirTurn's Bluetooth Smart pedals, the iRig BlueBoard, Genki Wave rings and Bluetooth MIDI devices pair inside forScore's Devices panel. Pedals that act as Bluetooth keyboards, such as PageFlip and Coda Stomp models, work too, as do game controllers, and most inputs can be remapped. Our [page turner pedal guide](/guides/best-page-turner-pedals/) compares the hardware.

AirPods head-turn gestures are free in the base app with AirPods Pro, AirPods 3 or AirPods Max on iPhone or iPad. Camera face gestures (head turn, wink or lip movement) need forScore Pro and a device with face tracking. Metronome Autoturn turns pages on a beat count, and Replay turns them along with an attached audio track. There is no listening-based score following.

Half-page turns, which forScore introduced in 2010, are adjustable, and since 15.2 partial turns also work in Best Fit landscape and multi-page views. Links and buttons handle repeats and jumps, Reflow adapts pages for small screens, crop and de-skew fix crooked scans, and performance mode blocks accidental gestures.

Cue links devices. A leader sends page turns and score changes to nearby forScore devices over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with no internet needed, and can send a missing score to a follower with a tap. For two devices acting as one two-page spread, or an Apple Watch remote, add the separate forScore Cue app ($4.99).

## How do you use forScore on iPad?

Import your PDFs, add some metadata, build a setlist, then pair your pedal in the Devices panel. Expect a learning curve: the developer himself calls forScore "a very complex app" that "can take some time to learn".

PDFs come in through the Files app, Dropbox or Box in the Services panel, AirDrop, or the share sheet, which can import several files at once. Scan turns camera shots into PDFs. Bookmarks split a long anthology into virtual scores, by hand or from a table of contents or CSV index, so a fake book behaves like a shelf of single pieces.

Metadata such as composer, genre, tags, key, tempo, rating and difficulty drives search, sorting and the grid view. Keep the free forScore 15.2 user guide (a PDF on forscore.co) open during your first week, since the September 2025 redesign moved several long-standing menus.

## How does annotation work in forScore?

forScore's annotation tools are among the deepest in any reader and are built around the Apple Pencil. Most players will find every marking they need without paying for Pro.

You can save unlimited custom pen presets, work in layers, place stamps (including your own), draw dynamic shapes such as slurs and crescendos, select and move markings, use a ruler, type text or write with Scribble. Pro adds almost 400 extra stamps, SF Symbol stamps, Page Copy & Paste and Apple Pencil hover and squeeze gestures.

Annotations stay editable when you send a score as a 4SC file, and since 15.2 rotating a page also rotates its markings, links and buttons. More techniques in our [annotation guide](/guides/annotate-sheet-music/).

## How does forScore handle your library and setlists?

forScore's library is built for thousands of scores, and iCloud keeps it the same on every Apple device you own. Plan for one weakness: sync has no version history.

Setlists hold folders and placeholders, play in original, alphabetical, least-recently-played or shuffled order, and continue page turns from one file to the next. You can share one as a 4SS package with or without the scores, as a combined PDF or as a text list.

iCloud sync, free since version 13, carries scores, bookmarks, setlists, metadata, annotations and recordings. Every device keeps a full copy, so forScore needs no connection on stage. But an edit or deletion reaches every device and can't be rolled back; deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 7 days, and the developer says regular manual backups are essential. A free forScore Backup Utility for Mac helps.

The Dashboard tracks 90 days of practice, sets goals and exports PDF reports for a teacher.

## How does forScore handle sharing and ensembles?

forScore shares by file and links devices with Cue, but it has no shared library, accounts or librarian tools. That suits a duo or a small group, not an orchestra distributing parts.

You can send a score as a 4SC file that keeps editable annotations, metadata and links, by AirDrop, Mail, Messages or a cloud service, or as a plain or annotated PDF. Pro adds time-limited shares that expire on a set date. iCloud sync is tied to one Apple ID, so it never shares content between people.

Schools get a passcode-protected Restrictions mode and purchasing through Apple's Volume Purchase Program, but no admin roles or central part distribution. Groups that need those should read [Newzik vs forScore](/compare/newzik-vs-forscore/); bands that mix Apple and Android devices, [forScore vs MobileSheets](/compare/forscore-vs-mobilesheets/).

## Can forScore transpose, play back or read MusicXML?

No. forScore is a PDF reader, and its own knowledge base says it can't transpose PDF music, play back the notes in a PDF or detect notes on a page.

It doesn't open MusicXML, Scan produces PDFs rather than notation, and there is no ChordPro support: text files become static PDFs. The partial workaround for transposition is a retailer such as Musicnotes, which lets you download purchased PDFs in other keys through the Services panel.

What forScore offers instead is practice support around the PDF. Most linked audio tracks play at 25% to 200% speed with pitch shift up to an octave and looping. A metronome that saves tempo per score, a tuner, a pitch pipe, an 88-key piano and a recorder are built in, and per-score MIDI messages go out when a score opens.

If you need conversion or playback, look at [Newzik](/reviews/newzik/) or [PlayScore](/reviews/playscore/), or read our guides to [transposing sheet music](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/) and [PDF to MusicXML](/guides/pdf-to-musicxml/).

## Is forScore free, and is forScore Pro worth it?

forScore is not free: it is a one-time $24.99 purchase with no free version or trial. forScore Pro, at $14.99/year, is optional, and most players won't need it.

The $24.99 covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro on up to 10 personal devices under one Apple ID, and the developer says no existing feature will require further payment. He typically avoids sales and warns the price may rise as major features arrive. Refunds go through Apple. Once you own the app, several Mutopia collections in its store are free.

Pro adds priority support, camera face gestures, pop-up menus, Page Copy & Paste, settings Profiles, the extra stamps, time-limited sharing and Apple Pencil hover and squeeze gestures. A non-renewing $2.99 pass gives you all of it for 30 days, the cheapest way to test face gestures. A Family Sharing tier exists, but the US App Store listing doesn't show its price.

Pro is worth it if you want face-gesture turns or lean on the extra stamps. On price, $24.99 once matches Newzik Essentials and costs less than a year of Newzik Premium ($44.99/year), while MobileSheets costs $15.99 per platform.

## Does forScore work on Android, Windows or Mac?

forScore runs natively on Mac, but there is no forScore for Android, Windows or the web. The developer says plainly that forScore only makes apps for Apple platforms.

A Google Play app called "forScore Music Chords & Tabs", from a publisher named IMO POCKET SHEET, describes itself as forScore for Android. forScore LLC does not publish it.

The Mac version is a dedicated macOS app, native on Intel and Apple silicon, with a menu bar, tabs and multiple windows that suit preparing parts at a desk. Face gestures, AirPods gestures, automatic document scanning and playback of streamed or DRM-protected Music tracks stay on iPad and iPhone. Current versions require iOS or iPadOS 18, macOS 15 or visionOS 2.

On Android or Windows, [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/) is the closest equivalent, with native apps, linked page turns and a one-time price. See our [Android](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-android/) and [Windows](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-windows/) rankings.

## What do forScore users report?

Users rate forScore very highly: 4.81 out of 5 from 43,198 ratings on the US App Store as of October 6, 2026, a far larger base than Newzik's 1,543 or MobileSheets' 65 on iOS. The documented friction points come mostly from the developer's own disclosures.

The first is complexity. The September 2025 redesign restructured long-standing menus, and six follow-up releases arrived in about two months, partly to work around interface elements that iPadOS 26 broke.

The second is support. forScore's support page says personalized support is currently unavailable and replies are not guaranteed. In October 2025 the developer disclosed that support tickets had gone unanswered for months, and in December 2025 he reported hiring a new customer service representative. The third is that you pay before you can try the app.

## Should you choose forScore?

If every device you read from is made by Apple and your music lives in PDFs, forScore is the reader to beat for $24.99. You get the most complete page turning, deep Apple Pencil annotation and a library that scales, with no subscription required.

Look elsewhere if your band mixes Apple with Android or Windows ([MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/)), if your ensemble needs shared parts, annotation layers or PDF playback ([Newzik](/reviews/newzik/)), or if you want a free reader to start with ([Piascore](/reviews/piascore/), compared in [forScore vs Piascore](/compare/forscore-vs-piascore/)). For chord charts rather than notation, [OnSong](/reviews/onsong/) and [SongbookPro](/reviews/songbookpro/) fit better.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a forScore for Android?

No. forScore LLC makes apps only for Apple platforms: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. A Google Play app calling itself forScore for Android comes from a different publisher. MobileSheets is the closest Android equivalent.

### Is forScore free?

No. forScore is a one-time $24.99 purchase on the App Store, with no free version or free trial. The price covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro on up to 10 personal devices, and major updates have been free to existing buyers.

### What is forScore Pro, and do I need it?

forScore Pro is an optional $14.99/year subscription that adds camera face gestures, almost 400 extra stamps, Page Copy & Paste, settings Profiles, time-limited sharing, Apple Pencil hover and squeeze gestures and priority support. A $2.99 non-renewing 30-day pass lets you try it. The core app works fully without it.

### Does forScore work on Windows or Mac?

forScore has a native Mac app, included in the same $24.99 purchase, that runs on Intel and Apple silicon Macs. There is no Windows or web version. On Windows, MobileSheets is the closest alternative.

### Can forScore transpose or play back sheet music?

No. forScore's knowledge base says it cannot transpose PDF music or play back the notes in a PDF, and it does not open MusicXML. Some retailers in its Services panel, such as Musicnotes, let you download purchased scores in other keys.

### Does forScore work offline?

Yes. Each device stores a full copy of your library, so you need no connection to perform. Cue's linked page turns also work without internet, over local Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
