# Newzik vs forScore: which sheet music app should you use in 2026?

**In short.** Pick forScore if you play solo from an iPad, iPhone or Mac: it has the more refined page turning, annotation and library for a one-time $24.99. Pick Newzik if your ensemble shares parts and markings or you want PDFs to play back and transpose, and accept that those features need Premium ($44.99/year). Newzik scores 8.0 overall and forScore 7.5.

## Key takeaways

- forScore leads on reading and page turning (9.5 vs 7.5 in our scoring): it links page turns across nearby devices with Cue and reads AirPods head gestures at no extra cost, while Newzik has had no linked page turns since April 2021.
- Newzik leads on sharing and ensembles (9.5 vs 5): its Projects sync parts and private, public or shared annotation layers in real time, and organization accounts add roles and per-project restrictions.
- forScore is a one-time $24.99 purchase for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro, with optional forScore Pro at $14.99/year; Newzik is free for 3 pieces, $24.99 one-time for Essentials, or $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime for Premium.
- Newzik's LiveScore turns PDFs into notation you can play back, transpose and export (Premium beyond 10 free pages); forScore cannot play back, transpose or convert the notes in a PDF.
- Neither app runs natively on Android or Windows; forScore has a native Mac app, while Newzik offers Newzik Web in any browser.

Newzik and forScore both run on the iPad, but they are built for different situations. forScore is a one-time purchase focused on the solo player's stage experience. Newzik is an account-based app focused on groups that share parts and markings, with PDF-to-notation conversion on top.

Newzik scores 8.0 in our [overall ranking](/best-sheet-music-apps/) and forScore 7.5. The gap comes from the weight our [published methodology](/how-we-rank/) gives to sharing, ensembles and smart notation. On reading, annotation, library and value, forScore scores higher.

## Newzik or forScore: which should you pick?

Pick forScore if you mostly play on your own from an iPad, iPhone or Mac. Pick Newzik if you play in an ensemble that distributes parts and markings, or if you want to hear and transpose your PDFs.

forScore wins on page-turning polish: Cue links page turns across nearby devices, AirPods head gestures cost nothing extra, and half-page turns have been there since 2010. The same purchase also gets you a native Mac app. Newzik wins when other people are involved: a conductor or teacher can push parts and markings into a shared Project, and members without an iPad can open it in a browser.

Neither app has a native Android or Windows version. If that is your device, read [Newzik vs MobileSheets](/compare/newzik-vs-mobilesheets/) or [forScore vs MobileSheets](/compare/forscore-vs-mobilesheets/) instead.

## How do platforms and price compare?

forScore costs less over time and covers more Apple devices; Newzik reaches more devices through its browser app but needs Premium for the features that set it apart. In our scoring, Newzik leads on platforms (7 vs 5.5) and forScore on value (8 vs 5).

As of October 2026, forScore is a one-time $24.99 purchase covering iPhone, iPad, a native Mac app and Vision Pro, on up to 10 personal devices under one Apple ID. forScore Pro is optional at $14.99/year, or $2.99 for a 30-day pass, and adds camera face gestures, extra stamps, time-limited sharing and priority support. There is no free trial of the app itself.

Newzik is free for 3 pieces and 10 LiveScore pages. Essentials is a $24.99 one-time purchase that covers up to 1,000 pieces, the annotation tools, Newzik Web and one shared Project. Premium costs $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime on the US App Store and adds unlimited storage, unlimited LiveScore conversions, PDF transposition, MusicXML and MIDI export, face-gesture turns and unlimited Projects. A 7-day free Premium trial is available.

Newzik's native app runs on iPad and iPhone only. On a Mac, Windows PC or Android tablet you sign in to Newzik Web, which Newzik positions for library work and sharing rather than performing. forScore has no browser version and nothing outside Apple's platforms.

Newzik's help center says that if Premium expires and your library holds more than 3 pieces, the library stays on Newzik's servers but can't be opened until you resubscribe or buy Essentials. forScore keeps a full copy of your library on each device and needs no account.

## Which is better for reading and page turning?

forScore is the better stage reader, scoring 9.5 to Newzik's 7.5. It supports every page-turn method we look for, including linked turns across devices, which Newzik no longer offers.

Both apps handle Bluetooth pedals, half-page turns, a performance mode that blocks stray touches and camera face gestures, which need forScore Pro or Newzik Premium. forScore goes further: AirPods head gestures in the base app (AirPods Pro, AirPods 3 or AirPods Max), Autoturn from its metronome, Reflow for small screens and direct support for a long list of page turners.

Newzik's face gestures also require a Face ID camera. It adds an experimental knock-on-the-stand mode and turns synced to an attached recording, and some reviewers find its toolbars can overlap the score.

The real gap is for duos and accompanists. Newzik removed Band Mode, its leader and follower page turns, in version 6.0 (April 2021), and Projects sync parts but not page turns. forScore's Cue sends page turns and score changes to nearby forScore devices without an internet connection, and the separate $4.99 Cue app adds a two-device Dual Page view. Our [page turner pedal guide](/guides/best-page-turner-pedals/) covers the hardware.

## Which has better annotation tools?

forScore has the edge for personal marking (9.5 vs 9), while Newzik's layers are better for markings other players need to see. Both are serious tools with an Apple Pencil.

forScore offers unlimited custom pen presets, layers, your own stamps, dynamic shapes such as slurs and crescendos, a selection tool, a ruler, typed text and Scribble. Pro adds almost 400 stamps.

Newzik covers pens, highlighters, straight lines, symbols, text, inserted pictures and, since February 2026, a Shapes tool for slurs, hairpins and tuplets. Inside a shared Project, each layer is private, public (visible but read-only) or shared (editable by everyone), so a principal can publish bowings while each player keeps personal fingerings. Some reviewers find the drawing less fluid than forScore's. Our [annotation guide](/guides/annotate-sheet-music/) goes further.

## How do their libraries and setlists compare?

forScore scores higher on library management (9.5 vs 8.5), with deeper metadata and no plan-based storage limit. Newzik's advantage is where the library lives: in its own cloud, reachable from a browser.

forScore organizes scores by composer, genre, tags, labels, key, tempo, rating and difficulty, splits long PDFs into bookmarks, and offers setlists with folders and placeholders. iCloud syncs scores, annotations, setlists and recordings across your Apple devices. That sync has no version history, and the developer recommends regular backups.

Newzik stores your library in Newzik Cloud: 3 pieces free, 1,000 with Essentials, unlimited with Premium. You can browse IMSLP and CPDL inside the app and receive rentals and purchases from 24 partner publishers, including Bärenreiter and Schott, in your Newzik inbox. Downloaded scores work offline, but sync and sign-in need a connection.

## Which is better for sharing and ensembles?

Newzik, clearly: it scores 9.5 to forScore's 5 on sharing and ensembles, and this is the main reason it ranks higher overall. forScore shares files; Newzik shares a live workspace.

In a Newzik Project, a librarian, conductor or teacher can add or replace parts and push markings to every member in real time. Essentials includes one Project and Premium makes them unlimited. Newzik Ensemble, priced on request, adds owner, admin and member roles, user groups and per-project limits on printing, export and recording.

forScore's group tools work device to device. You send 4SC files or annotated PDFs by AirDrop, Mail or a cloud service, a Cue leader can push a missing score to a follower, Pro adds shares that expire on a set date, and a passcode-protected Restrictions mode helps teachers. There is no shared library, no roles and no central part distribution. For more options, see the [best apps for orchestras](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-orchestras/).

## Can either app play back or transpose a PDF?

Only Newzik. Its LiveScore converts a PDF or scan into notation you can play back, loop, transpose and export, while forScore's knowledge base says it cannot play back or transpose the notes in a PDF. Newzik scores 9 on smart notation and forScore 4.

Conversions beyond the first 10 free pages need Premium, as do PDF transposition (up to an octave, with clef changes) and MusicXML or MIDI export. MusicXML files you already own open directly in Newzik's iPad and iPhone app with playback and transposition.

Accuracy is the caveat. Newzik's own guidelines say several voices on one staff are "still fragile" and handwritten music isn't recommended, and US App Store reviews from June to September 2026 report skipped notes, wrong note values and changed measure lengths. Test the free pages on your own repertoire before paying.

forScore's practice tools work around the PDF instead: linked audio tracks with speed and pitch control, a recorder, metronome, tuner, an 88-key piano and a Dashboard that tracks practice time. Our guide on [how to transpose sheet music](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/) covers other routes.

## Can you use both?

Yes, and for an ensemble player it can be the most practical setup. The natural split is forScore for your own repertoire and Newzik for the group that distributes parts through a Project.

forScore holds your solo pieces and practice recordings, with its stronger page turning and no recurring cost. Newzik holds the ensemble's parts and shared markings. If your group pays for Newzik Ensemble, members get Premium-level access through the organization. Whether a free account can join someone else's Project isn't documented, so ask your librarian before signing up.

The two libraries don't sync with each other. To move a score, export it from forScore as a PDF, with or without annotations, and import it into Newzik from Files, iCloud or Dropbox.

## Which should you choose?

Choose by how and with whom you play, not by the overall score. These scenarios cover most readers:

- Solo pianist or recitalist on an iPad: forScore, for the best reading and annotation at a one-time price. See the [best apps for piano](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-piano/).
- Accompanist or duo partner who wants two devices turning together: forScore, since Newzik has no linked page turns.
- You prepare and mark parts on a Mac: forScore, which includes a native Mac app. Newzik works on a Mac only in a browser.
- Orchestra, choir or section on iPads sharing bowings, breaths and cuts: Newzik, ideally with an organization account.
- Teacher sending material to a class: Newzik if students should receive updates and submit recordings in a Project; forScore if each student works alone and you want a passcode-locked Restrictions mode.
- You want to hear or transpose PDF parts: Newzik Premium, after testing LiveScore's free pages. [PlayScore](/reviews/playscore/) is a dedicated scanner alternative.
- Some members read from Android or Windows: Newzik Web gives them browser access to the same Projects, which forScore can't. If they perform from those devices, look at [MobileSheets](/reviews/mobilesheets/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Newzik better than forScore?

It depends on how you play. Newzik scores higher overall (8.0 vs 7.5) because our methodology weights sharing, ensembles and smart notation, where it leads clearly. forScore scores higher on reading, annotation, library and value, so it is the better choice for most solo players on Apple devices.

### Is forScore or Newzik cheaper?

forScore is a one-time $24.99 purchase, with an optional forScore Pro subscription at $14.99/year. Newzik Essentials also costs $24.99 once but leaves out unlimited LiveScore, PDF transposition, export and face gestures; Premium costs $9.99/month, $44.99/year or $179 lifetime on the US App Store as of October 2026. Newzik has a free version for 3 pieces, while forScore has no free trial.

### Does Newzik work on a Mac like forScore?

Not as an app. forScore's purchase includes a native Mac app for Intel and Apple silicon Macs. Newzik has no Mac app and its iPad app isn't offered on Apple Silicon Macs, so on a Mac you use Newzik Web in a browser.

### Which app can turn pages on several iPads at once?

forScore. Its built-in Cue feature lets a leader device send page turns and score changes to nearby forScore devices, and the separate $4.99 Cue app adds a two-device Dual Page view. Newzik removed its Band Mode in version 6.0 in April 2021, and its Projects sync parts and annotations but not page turns.

### Can forScore play back or transpose sheet music like Newzik?

No. forScore's knowledge base says it cannot play back or transpose the notes in a PDF, and its Scan tool only creates PDFs. Newzik's LiveScore converts PDFs into playable, transposable notation, with 10 free pages and Premium after that, though recent App Store reviews report errors on complex scores.
