# forScore vs Piascore: is forScore worth paying for in 2026?

**In short.** forScore is worth its one-time $24.99 if you want sync between devices, a Mac app, layered annotation and a deeper library: it leads Piascore on six of our seven criteria and scores 7.5 overall to Piascore's 6.3. Piascore is the better deal if you read from one iPad or iPhone: it is free, includes face-gesture page turns and IMSLP downloads, and its optional upgrade costs $5.99 once.

Choose Piascore if: Students and players on iPad or iPhone who want a solid reader without paying.

## Key takeaways

- forScore has no free version or free trial: it is a one-time $24.99 App Store purchase covering iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro, and only its optional Pro extras can be tried, with a $2.99 30-day pass.
- Piascore is free on iPad and iPhone with no time limit, including annotation, setlists, half-page turns, Bluetooth pedals and face-gesture page turns; a one-time $5.99 Full Upgrade adds the tuner, recorder, music player and annotated PDF export.
- forScore leads on reading (9.5 vs 8.5), annotation (9.5 vs 7.5), library (9.5 vs 7) and platforms (5.5 vs 3.5) in our scoring; Piascore leads only on value (9 vs 8).
- forScore syncs scores, annotations, setlists and recordings through iCloud; Piascore syncs nothing between devices, so each iPhone or iPad keeps its own library.
- Neither app runs on Android or Windows, and neither can play back, transpose or convert the notes in a PDF.

forScore and Piascore are two of the oldest sheet music readers on the iPad: forScore launched in April 2010 and Piascore in December 2010. Both read PDFs, both run only on Apple devices, and both handle pedals, half-page turns and face gestures. The difference most readers care about is price: forScore costs $24.99 before you can open it, while Piascore is free, with an optional $5.99 upgrade.

forScore scores 7.5 in our [overall ranking](/best-sheet-music-apps/) and Piascore 6.3. forScore leads on six of our seven criteria, and Piascore leads on value. Our [methodology](/how-we-rank/) explains the weights.

## forScore or Piascore: which should you pick?

Pick forScore if you use more than one Apple device, prepare parts on a Mac, or want the deepest annotation and library tools. Pick Piascore if you read from one iPad or iPhone and want a capable reader without paying.

For a student or occasional player with one iPad, Piascore covers the essentials for free. forScore earns its price once your library grows, or once you want the same scores and markings on an iPad, an iPhone and a Mac, because Piascore has no sync at all.

## Is forScore free?

No. forScore is a one-time $24.99 App Store purchase with no free version, lite edition or free trial. Piascore is the closest free alternative on iPad and iPhone.

As of October 2026, the $24.99 covers iPhone, iPad, a native Mac app and Vision Pro, on up to 10 personal devices under one Apple ID. It is not a subscription: forScore says every buyer since version 1.0 has received major upgrades for free. forScore Pro is optional at $14.99/year and adds camera face gestures, almost 400 extra stamps, time-limited sharing and priority support. A $2.99 30-day pass lets you try Pro, but only after you have bought the app.

Piascore is free to download and use, with no time limit or subscription. The free app covers reading, annotation, tags, setlists, half-page turns, Bluetooth pedals, face-gesture page turns, a metronome and IMSLP downloads. According to Piascore's help center, the one-time $5.99 Full Upgrade adds the recorder, tuner and music player, unlimited camera and photo import, export and printing of annotated PDFs, and all staff paper.

Piascore's help article on the Full Upgrade was last edited in 2023, before version 7. An October 2026 App Store review wishes PDF manipulations were free, so some tools may have moved. Check the upgrade screen in the app before relying on a specific feature.

So the gap is $24.99 against $0, or against $5.99 with Piascore's practice tools. Piascore scores 9 on value and forScore 8; the sections below show what the difference buys.

## Which devices do they run on, and do they sync?

Both are Apple-only, but forScore covers more Apple hardware and syncs across it, while Piascore syncs nothing. forScore leads on platforms, 5.5 to 3.5.

forScore's single purchase includes a dedicated Mac app for Intel and Apple silicon, plus Vision Pro. iCloud syncs scores, bookmarks, setlists, metadata, annotations and recordings across your devices, with no account to create. That sync has no version history, so the developer recommends regular backups. Face gestures and AirPods gestures don't work on the Mac.

Piascore runs on iPhone and iPad (version 7 requires iOS or iPadOS 26). On a Mac it runs only as the iPad app on Apple silicon with macOS 26, which we don't count as a Mac app. The bigger limit is sync: Piascore's help center says data is not synced between devices, so each iPhone or iPad keeps its own library and annotations, and moving everything to a new device takes a full device backup or Quick Start.

Neither app exists on Android or Windows. Google Play apps named after forScore and Piascore come from an unrelated publisher, IMO POCKET SHEET, not from either developer. If you need those platforms, see our [Android](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-android/) and [Windows](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-windows/) rankings.

## Which is better for reading and page turning?

forScore, 9.5 to 8.5, though this is where Piascore comes closest. Both handle Bluetooth pedals, face gestures, half-page turns and linked devices; forScore adds more hardware options and refinements.

Piascore's face-gesture turning is free on Face ID devices: close your right eye for the next page, your left eye for the previous one, or bend your mouth. Gestures pause for about 2 seconds after each turn, and App Store reviewers report mixed reliability, with some missed or unintended turns. Half-page turns work in portrait only. Piascore officially supports AirTurn and iRig BlueTurn pedals, works with the pedals of some Roland digital pianos, and offers auto vertical scrolling. Its older user manual documents a Lead/Follow mode that syncs page turns and song selection between devices; a user confirmed it in August 2025, but we have not seen it confirmed in version 7.

forScore's camera face gestures need forScore Pro, but AirPods head gestures are part of the base app (AirPods Pro, AirPods 3 or AirPods Max). Its half-page turns are adjustable and also work in landscape. It connects directly to a long list of pedals, the Genki Wave ring and game controllers, adds Reflow for small screens, and includes Cue: a leader device sends page turns and score changes to nearby forScore devices without an internet connection.

Both apps have had rough updates. Piascore's version 7 redesign (September 2026) drew reports of broken bookmarks, slower page turns and crashes, most of them fixed in 7.0.5 to 7.0.9. forScore's September 2025 redesign was followed by six follow-up releases in about two months. Our guides to [page turner pedals](/guides/best-page-turner-pedals/) and [hands-free page turning](/guides/hands-free-page-turning/) cover the hardware and gestures.

## Which has better annotation tools?

forScore, by a clear margin (9.5 vs 7.5). Piascore covers everyday marking for free; forScore adds the layers, presets and editing tools that matter when you mark a lot.

Piascore gives you six configurable pens (color, thickness, nib), stamps for dynamics, fingerings and accidentals, text boxes, shapes, an eraser and undo. Since version 7.0.6, an optional Pencil-only mode leaves your fingers free to turn pages. There are no annotation layers, and exporting a PDF with your markings needs the Full Upgrade.

forScore offers unlimited custom pen presets, layers, your own stamps, dynamic shapes such as slurs and crescendos, a selection tool, a ruler, typed text and Scribble. Scores shared as 4SC files keep their annotations editable for other forScore users, and Pro adds almost 400 stamps. Our [annotation guide](/guides/annotate-sheet-music/) covers both approaches.

## How do their libraries compare?

forScore is built for large libraries (9.5 vs 7). Piascore's edge is free public-domain music inside the app.

forScore sorts scores by composer, genre, tags, labels, key, tempo, rating and difficulty, splits long PDFs into bookmarks from a table of contents or CSV index, and offers setlists with folders, placeholders and shuffle. Its Services panel downloads purchases from retailers such as Musicnotes and Presto Music.

Piascore has tags, search, sorting, custom covers, pinned scores and ordered setlists whose songs open as tabs for one-tap switching. Its built-in IMSLP search downloads public-domain editions without leaving the app; the App Store listing cites 131,000 works. The Piascore Store sells individual scores ($0.99 to $9.99 each on the US App Store), but its help center says buyers outside Japan can only buy works not managed by Japanese copyright societies, such as classical pieces and original compositions.

Backups are Piascore's weak point. Without sync, a full backup means a Finder or iTunes device backup, and a July 2026 App Store reviewer reported losing notes and large books when changing devices.

## Which is better for sharing with other musicians?

They are close (5 vs 4.5), and neither is built for ensembles. forScore shares your annotations; Piascore shares setlists without them.

forScore sends scores as 4SC files with editable annotations by AirDrop, Mail, Messages or a cloud service, and setlists as 4SS packages. A Cue leader can push a missing score to a follower, and Pro adds shares that expire on a set date.

Piascore sends setlists to other Piascore users by AirDrop or as a .pssl file, with or without the PDFs, but never with annotations or tags. Annotated PDF export needs the Full Upgrade. Neither app has shared libraries, roles or part distribution; for that, see the [best apps for orchestras](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-orchestras/).

## Can either app play back or transpose music?

No. Both are PDF readers: neither opens MusicXML, plays back or transposes the notes, or converts a PDF into notation. forScore scores 4 on smart notation and Piascore 3.5, and the gap comes from practice tools.

forScore includes a metronome with Autoturn, a tuner, a pitch pipe, an 88-key piano, a recorder that links takes to the score, and audio tracks with speed and pitch control. Piascore's metronome, with a flashing visual mode, is free; its tuner, recorder and music player with A-B repeat need the $5.99 Full Upgrade. Piascore demonstrated interactive MusicXML scores and PDF-to-MusicXML conversion at NAMM in January 2026, but neither had reached the app as of version 7.0.9.

If you need playback or transposition, see our [sheet music scanner apps](/best/sheet-music-scanner-apps/) or the guide on [how to transpose sheet music](/guides/transpose-sheet-music/).

## Is forScore worth $24.99 over Piascore?

Yes, if you will use what Piascore lacks: sync, a Mac app, annotation layers and deep library tools. If you read from one iPad and mark lightly, Piascore gives you most of the stage experience for free.

Here is what the extra $19 to $24.99 buys, criterion by criterion:

- Reading (9.5 vs 8.5): free AirPods head gestures, Cue built in, landscape half-page turns and wider hardware support. Piascore's free face gestures narrow the gap.
- Annotation (9.5 vs 7.5): layers, presets, a selection tool and annotations other forScore users can edit.
- Library (9.5 vs 7): richer metadata, bookmarks and retailer downloads, with iCloud as a second copy. Piascore keeps the IMSLP advantage.
- Platforms (5.5 vs 3.5): iCloud sync and a native Mac app.
- Sharing (5 vs 4.5) and smart notation (4 vs 3.5): editable shared annotations, plus a tuner and recorder that Piascore sells for $5.99.
- Value (8 vs 9): Piascore wins, because its free version is complete enough for many players.

A low-risk path is to start with Piascore and move to forScore if you outgrow it.

## Can you move from Piascore to forScore later?

Yes, as PDFs, and your markings come along only if you export them. Piascore uploads original PDFs to Dropbox or Google Drive without annotations, and exporting annotated PDFs needs its $5.99 Full Upgrade.

forScore can't read Piascore's .pssl setlist files, so you rebuild setlists and tags after importing the PDFs. Some Piascore users report that PDFs moved through cloud storage arrived without their annotations, so check a few files before deleting anything.

## Which should you choose?

Start with your devices and how much you mark:

- Student or occasional player with one iPad or iPhone: Piascore, free. See our [free sheet music apps](/best/free-sheet-music-apps/).
- You read from an iPad and an iPhone, or prepare parts on a Mac: forScore, for iCloud sync and the native Mac app.
- Pianist or soloist with a large library and heavy markings: forScore. See the best apps [for piano](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-piano/) and [for iPad](/best/sheet-music-apps-for-ipad/).
- You want hands-free turns without a subscription: Piascore's face gestures are free on Face ID devices, while forScore's free option is AirPods head gestures.
- Classical player who downloads from IMSLP often: Piascore has it built in.
- Duo partner or accompanist who wants linked page turns: forScore's Cue, which is current and documented; Piascore's Lead/Follow mode appears only in its older manual.
- You use Android or Windows: neither. Compare [forScore vs MobileSheets](/compare/forscore-vs-mobilesheets/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is forScore free?

No. forScore is a one-time $24.99 App Store purchase with no free version, lite edition or free trial. The optional forScore Pro subscription ($14.99/year) can be tried with a $2.99 30-day pass, but only after you buy the app. If you want a free reader on iPad or iPhone, Piascore is the closest option.

### Is Piascore better than forScore?

For most players, no. forScore scores higher on six of our seven criteria and 7.5 overall to Piascore's 6.3. Piascore wins on price and includes face-gesture page turns without a subscription, so it is the better choice if you read from a single iPad or iPhone and don't want to pay.

### What is the best free alternative to forScore?

On iPad and iPhone, Piascore. Its free version covers annotation, tags, setlists, half-page turns, Bluetooth pedals, face-gesture page turns, a metronome and IMSLP downloads. It lacks forScore's iCloud sync, native Mac app and annotation layers, and like forScore it does not run on Android or Windows.

### Is forScore a one-time purchase?

Yes. The $24.99 price covers the app on up to 10 personal Apple devices under one Apple ID, and forScore says every buyer since version 1.0 has received major upgrades for free. forScore Pro is an optional $14.99/year subscription for extras such as camera face gestures and almost 400 more stamps; the app works fully without it.

### Does Piascore sync between iPad and iPhone like forScore?

No. Piascore's help center says data is not synced between devices, so each iPhone or iPad keeps its own library and annotations. The $5.99 Full Upgrade can be restored on your other devices with the same Apple ID, but scores and annotations stay on the device where you added them. forScore syncs scores, annotations, setlists and recordings through iCloud.

### Can I move my library from Piascore to forScore?

Yes, as PDFs. Piascore uploads original PDFs to Dropbox or Google Drive without annotations, and exporting PDFs with your markings needs its $5.99 Full Upgrade. forScore doesn't read Piascore's .pssl setlist files, so you rebuild setlists and tags after importing.
